The pistachio tree is characterized by wide-spreading branches but the tree itself rarely reaches more than nine meters in height. It produces bright green leaves that are characterized by one to five pairs of pinnate, leathery, thick, and wide leaflets. Pistachio trees are dioecious and produce male and female flowers on different plants. The flowers are usually pollinated by wind. The flowers are borne in loose clusters. The flowers turn into white clusters of fruits that are up to 2 cm long and tend to split at one side when ripe. The fruit is covered with a hard shell that covers a green kernel that is enclosed in thin, reddish skin. The kernels have a pleasing resinous flavor. To ensure good yield and proper pollination the female trees are interplanted with male trees in a ratio of 1:6.
