Snapdragon

Snapdragons are members of the Snapdragon family, which also includes plants that have non-snapping flowers. The best known is the garden flower Antirrhinum majus , which has a trumpet-like spurt of flower petals extending from its mouth. Others include campion ( Lychnis ), corncockle ( Agrostemma ), and bluebottle ( Centaurea). Little children like to snap open the flowers of snapdragons, but most people don't know that they also come in varieties with open-faced flowers. This plant is native throughout much of Europe, North Africa, and temperate areas of Asia. Its name comes from the pointed tubers that were mistaken for dragons' teeth by an early herbalist. Some people are allergic to snapdragons, which are therefore best kept out of houses where someone is sensitive. The plants contain sesquiterpene lactones that may cause dermatitis in people who handle them frequently. However, this substance also has antifungal properties. A purple variety, named "Van Houtte", was named after a Belgian nurseryman who introduced it in 1853. The pink to lavender snapdragon that we know today is called "Langtrees" and was introduced in 1907 by the seed company Lathrop Company (no relationship to Thomas) for 'Sunray Farms' in Lincoln Nebraska. The flowers in this variety are a deep pink that changes to almost white at the throat. Snapdragons are either annuals or perennials depending on climate and light availability. They grow best in full sun but will suffer in high heat. Their soil should be well-drained for optimal growth, and they can grow to about two feet tall. The common snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) is a biennial or short-lived perennial plant that grows to about two feet tall. It has long, narrow leaves, and bears whorls of flowers atop slender stalks with the lower ones having narrower, more tubular flowers. The best known are those with snappable flowers, but others have open-faced flowers including double forms. This variety of snapdragon is a deep pink that changes to almost white at the throat. Global snapdragon production

In terms of global production, the snapdragon flower is most prevalent in South America. This is followed by North America, Europe, and Asia. Africa produces the least amount of snapdragon flowers globally. Snapdragon flowers are used in a variety of settings, including as ornamental plants, in perfume making, and as cut flowers. The vast majority of snapdragon flowers are grown for ornamental purposes. Snapdragon flowers come in a wide range of colors, including white, pink, purple, red, and yellow. The most popular color globally is pink. Snapdragon flowers are relatively easy to care for and can thrive in a variety of climates.
