Spiny Lobster

The spiny lobster ( Panulirus interruptus ) is a common, edible marine crustacean that lives in warm waters off the western coast of North America. Like all decapod crustaceans, P. interruptus has 10 legs; five pairs of pereiopods, and one pair of modified antennae known as uropods. Spiny lobsters also have two large, cream-colored spots on the top of the second segment of the tail. Spiny lobsters vary in color from almost white to dark red-orange. They get their name from the forward-pointing spines that cover their bodies and help protect them from predators. These yellowish, flat, oval-shaped creatures grow up to 11 inches long and can live up to 25 years in the wild. Spiny lobsters live in holes and crevices along the ocean floor. Large rocks and sunken ships provide homes for many spiny lobsters. They also live under rock ledges, around kelp plants, and among sea anemones, corals, and sponges (Porcelain crabs). Spiny lobsters feed on worms, mollusks (such as snails and clams), sea urchins, small fish, crabs, and carrion (dead animals). With their strong front claws, they break apart objects like seashells. They also dig through the sand looking for food. Spiny lobsters get their name from the forward-pointing spines that cover their bodies to help protect them from predators. Some people think spiny lobsters look like small versions of Maine lobsters, but they're actually more closely related to hermit crabs. The closest relatives to spiny lobsters are hermit crabs and rock crabs, which can be easily distinguished from spiny lobsters by their extremely long abdomens, which are protected by a complete or partial shell. Global spiny lobster production

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the global production of spiny lobster was around 660,000 tonnes in 2016. This is a slight decrease from the previous year when production was estimated at 675,000 tonnes. The majority of spiny lobster is caught in the wild, with only a small amount being farmed. The top producers of spiny lobsters are Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United States. These five countries account for over 60% of global production. Indonesia is by far the largest producer, with an estimated catch of 400,000 tonnes in 2016. This is followed by India, with a catch of around 80,000 tonnes. The global trade in spiny lobster is worth around US$3 billion annually. The United States is the largest importer, followed by Japan and China. The vast majority of spiny lobster that is traded is caught in the wild. Only a small fraction is sourced from aquaculture. The demand for spiny lobster is increasing due to its popularity as a culinary delicacy. This has led to increased pressure on wild stocks, which are already under threat from overfishing and habitat loss. Aquaculture could be a viable option for supplying the demand for spiny lobster, but it faces challenges such as high start-up costs and the need for suitable farming sites.
