Pangasіus

Pangasius hypophthalmus is a species of catfish in the Pangasiidae family. It is found in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are rivers and freshwater lakes. Catfish are a major food source in some areas of Southeast Asia. The fish is usually dried, salted, or fermented before being prepared for cooking. "Pangasius" has been reported to contain high levels of mercury and it is advised that intake needs to be managed to avoid toxicity. This has reduced the consumption of this fish in Thailand significantly. "Pangasius hypophthalmus" is common throughout its range in rivers, canals, and freshwater lakes. It is also found in the lower Mekong River, Chao Phraya River, and Mae Klong River. The populations are unknown but thought to be threatened by overfishing and habitat loss due to dams. IUCN Redlist lists the species as least concerned. "Pangasius hypophthalmus" are carnivorous fish that feed on smaller fishes, arthropods, and zooplankton. Juveniles feed mainly on invertebrates but start to prey on other fish when they reach about 5 centimeters in length. Fish are found in schools although the adults are reported to be less gregarious. "Pangasius hypophthalmus" is one of the commercially important fishes in Southeast Asia. It is also cultivated in fresh water ponds and aquaculture has expanded to other parts of the world. The fish serves as an inexpensive source of protein for communities where it occurs naturally. But because "Pangasius" is adaptable to different habitats, they are also found in ponds and farms. It is reported that Thailand has banned the cultivation of this fish because it can escape into the wild and cause damage to freshwater fisheries. Pangasius bocourti is a species of catfish in the Pangasiidae family. It is found in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat is swamped. Pangasius sp. nov. 1 is a species of catfish from Southeast Asia where it ranges from the Mae Klong River in central Thailand to the Mekong River system in southeastern Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam as well as the coastal drainages of northwestern Malaysia, and among inland waters associated with brackish estuaries. It has not yet been assigned to a specific genus.

Global pangasius production

Pangasius production in 2018 was estimated at 5.48 million tonnes, an increase of 1.4% from the previous year (5.41 million tonnes). The vast majority of farmed pangasius is sourced from Vietnam (85%), followed by Bangladesh (7%), Egypt (3%), and other countries (5%). Pangasius is a relatively new addition to the aquaculture industry, with large-scale commercial production only beginning in the early 1990s. The fish is now farmed in over 20 countries around the world, although Vietnam and Bangladesh remain the biggest producers. Pangasius farming involves raising the fish in ponds or cages, with most farmers using commercial feeds to ensure rapid growth. The fish are typically harvested when they reach around 1-2 kg in weight, although some farms may produce larger fish for the export market. Pangasius is a versatile fish that can be used in a wide range of dishes. It has a mild flavor and a firm, flaky texture that makes it ideal for frying, grilling, or baking. The fish is also popular in soups and stews. Pangasius is a relatively cheap fish, with prices typically ranging from $1-2 per kg. This low cost, combined with its versatility, makes pangasius an attractive option for many consumers. Pangasius production is forecast to continue growing in the coming years, as demand for the fish remains strong. This growth is likely to be driven by expansion in existing farming areas, as well as the development of new farms in countries such as Cambodia and Laos.
